Listening to ‘Luv’, the latest offering by Glasgow acoustic-pop outfit Flynn, one has to wonder if the sort of simple folk that have been permeating every part of the music scene has run its course.
This song, and especially its middle eight, is nice enough, but from the obligatory tambourine right down to the pleasant, Of Monsters And Men gender-blending vocals, every aspect of this song has been tried, tested and well and truly worn out by the millions of similar acts that have cropped up in the past few years.
There is originality here, particularly in the call-and-response melodies of singers Liam Allison and Linzi Clark and the understated but lively guitar hook, but it’s few and far between, and ultimately the song leaves little impression.
Flynn are sure to thrive in this post-Mumford/Feist/Florence/Daughter world where songs like this can breach the top of the charts, but it remains to be seen if they can mature enough to stand out from the crowd while still keeping the sugar-coated pop sensibility that makes this ditty, if not interesting, then at least endearing.
